How are over a dozen different countries connected through the world of white ceramic with a cobalt glaze, otherwise known as blue-and-white ceramics? What do we know about them, or at least what do we think we know? This project examines how a multitude of countries are connected through the production and circulation of blue-and-white ceramics over the course six centuries. It challenges common assumptions about these objects by analyzing the historical, geographical, and economic contexts in which the objects are produced, exported, and distributed. Drawing on nine objects in the Five College Collections, this digital resource enables visitors to explore each of these interactions that informed the production and popularization of blue-and-white ceramics at their own pace with their pre-existing knowledge. This project allows for us to come to understand our own biases, reckon with them, and work to move past them.
