Four-Block Strip Quilt

Four Block Strip Quilt is made of cotton twill and synthetic fabric from used men’s work clothes. Sewn in 1960, the quilt was created as one of three, each quilt featuring different reimaginings of the same fabric in different combinations. These quilts were part of a larger tradition of more simplified constructions of work-clothes quilts, which allowed for more experimentation.

Four Block Strip Quilt has an interesting, disjointed quality. The sudden shifts in patterning, broken borders, irregular shapes, and asymmetrical designs all create visual interest. The combination of prints and colors is especially unique as it is shown in three variations, each very different but displaying the same mix of worn out blue, black, gray, and tan denim with a vibrant teal.
