Reacting to a Sophian request that “all those in sympathy with the recent crisis in Birmingham wear a black armband or ribbon beginning Sunday and until the crisis is resolved”, students argued for and against the efficacy of demonstrating support and making an impact on national race issues in that way. In another editorial, a student documented the efforts of university students toward integration, calling for action and offering suggestions, although she cautioned that “the possibilities for more direct and man-sized action on our part seem few”.
