1968 – In Sophian article, Black Students’ Alliance defines role

1969 – Nancy Grant ‘71 writes Sophian article on difficulties in recruiting black students → Dean Sehmann and students respond; Afro-Am room created; Afro-Am Studies major approved for Fall 1969 by faculty; BSA Student demands letter to President Mendenhall released in the Sophian; Work on BSA demands continues; Louise B. Hall ‘68 becomes assistant director of admissions

1970 – Black Student demands published in the Sophian after an incident at Amherst; Faculty vote on black studies department; A Black Solidarity poster is set on fire in Scales house, Committee formed to investigate racial tensions
