A Smith student volunteer with the ship “HOPE” (Health Opportunity for People Everywhere) described her experience aboard and the necessary medical services that its staff provided, in 1966, in Nicaragua (previously having served Indonesia, Vietnam, Peru, Ecuador, and Guinea). She and another Smith student were the first women to be accepted as summer volunteers.
