BSA Student demands letter to President Mendenhall released in the Sophian

In addition to the approval of an African-American Studies major, the remaining demands were published and focused especially on bringing more Black students and faculty to Smith and the steps required to do so, as well as expanding the scope of study abroad and away programs to include African and historically Black universities. According to the BSA statement, meeting the demands would strengthen “the character, usefulness, and vitality of the college community.” The ninth and final point asserted that all previous demands “must be met by Fall term, 1969.”
