Committee holds South Africa Awareness Forum
The Ethical Investment Committee (EIC) held a forum to raise the general student body’s awareness of issues in South Africa. This was part of an overall effort by the EIC to address the millions of dollars Smith College had invested in South African and South-African-related companies. There were three speakers: Ken Carsten, executive director of the International Defense and Aid Fund, Jabu Maphalala, a black sophomore at Amherst from South Africa, and Peter DeViliers, a white associate professor at Smith College from South Africa.
