Students meet with top affirmative action officer candidate
Directly after the protest march, students met with Richard Williams, the candidate who had been offered the position of affirmative action officer by President Dunn and the selection committee. Members from Concerned Students of All Colors (CSAC) attended, as did members of the selection committee. Although students told Williams that the protest march was not specifically against him, they did emphasize the need for students of color to have more input into the affirmative action officer search process. Additionally, students called for the admissions action officer to be imbued with authority above administrative control, claiming that the current job description was too vague to give the officer power and accountability. Williams said he would have to think about his response to the job offer and the students’ questions, reiterating that he could not accept the job offer if student support was not behind it.
