Debate opens symposium on Vietnam at Amherst College
A symposium on Vietnam at Amherst College opened with a debate between two figures with radically different viewpoints: Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Alvin Friedman, who affirmed that to enable the people of Vietnam to be free “we must use military power”; and Professor Henry Steele Commager, who rejected the premise that the U.S. was protecting the interests and wellbeing of the Vietnamese people, “for the attack comes from us”.
