Cultural Center dedicated to Mwangi ‘61
The class of 1973 had voted to rename the Afro-American Studies Room to the Mwangi Cultural Center, but it was not until this day that the Center was officially dedicated. Ng’endo (Florence) Mwangi ’61, Smith College’s first African student and the first female medical doctor in Kenya, was present for the dedication ceremony and spoke to those assembled. Members from the different organizations that occupied the Center–Black Students’ Alliance, Asian Students’ Association, Korean Students of Smith, and Nosotras–recited poetry and presented Dr. Mwangi with gifts.
The full Sophian article on the dedication ceremony can be found here.
