Deutsche Frauen-Leichtathletik Meisterschaften

Post-War Germany was not a peaceful period. The war left a bitter taste in many people, Germany’s economy was on the verge of collapsing, and violent revolutions left many dead.

It was also a turning point in Women’s Rights. During the First World War, many women participated in the war effort. They flooded into the factories to aid their country and proved to be as effective as male workers. This opened up new opportunities for women to participate in fields usually dominated by men, including sports.

These collecting cards from the Erdal Shoe Polish Co. highlight women participating in different sports in 1927. It was less than a decade after women earned the right to vote in 1918.
