Mary Jarrett
Director, 1918; Associate Director, 1919-1923
B.A. Goucher College; Boston Children’s Aid Society from 1903 to 1913; Boston Psychopathic Hospital, 1913-1925. Designed and directed the first session of what became the Smith College School for Social Work, 1918. When the SSW became more permanent for the 1919 year, she was asked to become associate director. Delivered “The Psychiatric Thread Running Through All Social Case Work” at the National Conference of Social Work in 1919. Founded the organization which later became the American Association of Psychiatric Social Workers, 1920. Researcher and program and policy analyst for the U.S. Public Health Service and the Veterans Administration, 1923-1927. Helped found a chronic disease hospital (now known as Goldwater Memorial Hospital). Trained nurses on home care for the chronically ill for the Works Progress Administration. The Welfare Council of New York City published two of her books, The Care of the Chronic Sick in Private Homes for the Aged in and near New York City in 1931 and Chronic Illness in 1933.
