In this portion of the oral history, McGoldrick recounts why she chose Smith School for Social Work, her experience at the school, and the importance of friends who understood her research passions and who kept her accountable to stand up for the oppressed.
In the complete oral history available from the Smith College Special Collections, McGoldrick reflects on her Irish roots and her childhood in Brooklyn and on a farm in Pennsylvania. She discusses her time as a student at Brown, Yale, and the Smith School for Social Work, particularly in the context of social change movements of the 60s, 70s and 80s. McGoldrick also spends a good portion of the interview talking about her work in family therapy, notably at the Family Institute in New Jersey, and on her work with genograms.
