In 1959, Dean Howard J. Parad gave a speech titled “Smith School in Perspective.” He followed the lead of his predecessor, Florence Day, in recognizing Mary Jarrett’s role. His friendship with Jarrett led to even more details than Day offered about the founding. He also includes information on the scholarly landscape around the prior forty plus years of the school.

It is against this historic background that we should view the epochal meeting arranged between Mary Jarrett and President William Allan Neilson of Smith which took place in Grand Central Station in New York in April 1918 – thus earning for Smith the reputation of being the only school of social work to be conceived in a railroad station.
