Student Council suggests international guest nights

On October 7th, Student Council met to discuss potential new projects, including the sponsoring of international students and guest speakers in houses. The SC invited International Students President Sylvia de Kanter to go over plans. The idea stemmed from the recognition of Smith students’ ignorance to the cultures and experiences of international students. De Kanter discussed the issue in an interview with the Sophian, saying that many non-American students wanted their friends to take more of an interest in their cultures, and to have an opportunity to educate their peers about other ways of going through the world. Student Council decided that houses should invites one or two international students at a time to casual dinners with discussions afterwards. People were encouraged to reach out to women in their classes, and the venture was reportedly successful in Capen House.
