Florence Mwangi, Smith’s first African student, is interviewed by the Sophian
Florence Mwangi, the 22 year old Smith freshman who would go on to be the namesake of the Mwangi Cultural Center, was interviewed for the Sophian in October of 1957. In the interview she discussed her plans to be a pre med student, and to eventually become a general practitioner back home in Kenya. The article explores the differences in the governing of schools in Kenya and at Smith, and Mwangi emphasizes Kenyans’ desire to see the end of their colonization, and the lack of agency or opportunity afforded them by Britain. When asked about the future of Kenya, she said she foresaw “complete independence.”
