Q&A Held with Southern Students about Sit-Ins

On Saturday, March 11th, an informal discussion was held in the Chapel Lounge between Smithies and student-participants in the Southern Sit-Ins. The event was sponsored by the NAACP and Christian Association. The Southerners were white students Rebecca Owens and Alice Hilswick of Randolph-Macon College, and black student Barbara Thomas from Virginia Theological Seminary. The young women participated in the initial November sit-ins in Lynchburg, Virginia, were arrested, and were sentenced to 30 days in jail. They discussed everything from the initial interest meeting to the sit-in itself, their experiences in court and jail, and the repercussions of their participation at their respective colleges. The Sophian later published an article on the event on March 14th.
