Hampshire Valley petitions in support of U.S. interventionism in Vietnam

Two articles in the Sophian, one on October 28th and one on November 4th, took up the issue of support for or rejection of U.S. intervention in Vietnam in the U.S. college context. Several professors in the Hampshire Valley claiming moderate viewpoints wrote a petition supporting the U.S. administration’s policy. They expressed concern that a “small minority of the intellectual community whose tactics have led to highly exaggerated estimates of their numbers” would cast doubt on U.S. support to the people of South Vietnam with their critical views. In a similar vein, in their November 4th letter to the editor two students affirmed the claim from U.S. college officials that “Vietnam protest movements on American college campuses involve only a small hard core of dissenters”. They posted a petition in support of the U.S. administration’s policy in every Smith house.
