Civil rights call for students to help with black voter registration
The Sophian announced a holiday initiative from five civil rights groups to recruit student volunteers to register black voters. They hoped to recruit 600 college students to work in 80 locations in six Southern states. The groups sponsoring “Freedom Christmas” were the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the Congress of Racial Equality, and the NAACP. The initiative was set to run from a first orientation on December 19th until January 7th.
