Faculty opinions on student activism

The Sophian interviewed seven Smith professors about their opinions on student protests and activism at Smith and nationwide. The professors chosen were from history (2), religion, government, education, sociology, and physics. Various expressed doubt over student competence and knowledge in terms of their ability to weigh in on college policy. However, others encouraged informed concern and action, with History Professor Ramon Ruiz affirming that “Student activism is the result of learning in the classroom and reading. To say that students have no right to apply what they’ve been taught is hypocrisy.”
