Black UMass student speaks on civil rights issues

(Date is for when it was reported in the Sophian)

The Sophian ran an article on Mike Thelwell, a black graduate student in the UMass creative writing program, after he criticized William Styron’s novel Confessions of Nat Turner at a forum in Graham Hall. In the article, he shared his views on the civil rights struggle, noting a need for back nationalism and a justification for black violence, although he himself participated in a non-violent manner. His focus was an international one and he talked a bit about his native country, Jamaica.
