Chinese international student statement on Nixon in China

A group of Chinese international students at Smith released a statement on President Richard Nixon’s visit to China and meeting with Chairman Mao Tse Tung. They cited hope for improved relations between the two countries and pride and affinity for China but also observed the prefabricated conceptions of China that Americans held and the consequent framing of the visit in the media. These students charged that cultural exchange and understanding were required to make successful attempts at political reconciliation.
