Administration buys new building

(Date is for when it was reported in the Union-News)

Smith College bought a new building on Green Street that was home to a bookstore in order to make space to move their own bookstore and to provide accommodations for the students who had agreed to move out of Hampshire House. The previous inhabitants of Hampshire House were commuting, non-residential students who had used half of that building as a social and study space. They had agreed to leave Hampshire House so that the members of Smith’s UNITY organizations would have a temporary multicultural center to use. The heads of UNITY had held off on signing their contract with the administration to use Hampshire House until the Green Street building purchase was finalized.

A Union-News (Springfield) article on the purchase can be found here.
