Indigenous Students’ Association (ISA), faculty work to expand curricular offerings

(Date is for when it was reported in the Sophian)

In their November 14th issue, the Sophian reported on efforts to expand the Five College Native American course offerings. According to the article, the Indigenous Students’ Association (ISA) at Smith had experienced a resurgence in members in 1996. Members were working to garner support on campus and have their voices heard on the issue of Native Americans in the curriculum. Smith faculty members were also working toward incorporating more material about Native Americans into the curriculum. Neal Salisbury, a Smith professor of history, was teaching a course about Native American history in the spring. He gave the Sophian details about a Five College faculty committee based around raising awareness of Native American issues in the classroom.

The full Sophian article on the curriculum can be found here (1, 2).
