Head resident writes inflammatory Sophian letter
The Sophian published a letter to the editor from the head resident of King House, Carey Shaffer ‘97, in its February 13th issue. Shaffer wrote about what she viewed as a double-standard at Smith: according to her, “Minorities are not treated equally. They are treated better.” She goes on to say that in her experience, the upset people who have come to her are the “straight, white, Catholic, wealthy residents” who have been “the victims of angry bashing by a very vocal minority.” Shaffer ends her letter by saying that although it might feel good for a lesbian to bring a straight girl in front of a board of her peers for disagreeing with her lifestyle, “in the real world, there is no Bias Committee.”
