Smith students start “Pearls and Cashmere” tumblr

In response to Anne Spurzem’s hateful letter where she mourns that “the days of white, wealthy, upper-class students from prep schools in cashmere coats and pearls who marry Amherst men are over,” Smith students started a tumblr blog using Spurzem’s own words to send a quite different message. Instead of having diversity seen in a bad light, these students wanted to show that diversity made the Smith community better. The founders asked other students to send in submissions of themselves wearing clothing resembling cashmere and pearls alongside a comment about their identities. By gathering together all of these Smith student voices, they hoped to show Anne Spurzem what Smith’s student body was really like and affirm the same thing within their own community.

The “Pearls and Cashmere” tumblr blog can be found here.
