Meredith Martindale ‘58 shares her views on the “World Situation”
On March 18th, in the first of four columns, Meredith Martindale ‘58 shared her views on the world in the pages of the Sophian. The piece was titled “Student Protests World Situation,” and featured a disclaimer at the top which emphasized that the article reflected her personal views, and encouraging students to contact the paper about the series. The part of the article which stood out, were Martindale’s opinions on events in the Middle/Near East, East & Southeast Asia, and Northern Africa. She lamented the reach of communism, the “population menace” in the Middle East, and Japan’s reintroduction of trade with “Red China.” She even says of North Africa that, “all little white brothers’ heads may be sitting on top of a big totem pole as soon as arms arrive.” Perhaps her racialized and western perspectives on countries where people of color were seeking autonomy and separation from western imperialism are what made the Sophian add their disclaimer.
