April & May, 1969
Work on BSA demands continues
(April 17 is when it was reported in the Sophian)
An April 1969 meeting with the Committee on Social Responsibility reported on the creation and integration of courses into the curriculum of the new African-American Studies major and the effort to hire more Black faculty members to teach these courses. As allocated by Demand No. 2 a joint supervisory committee had been established to oversee the development of the major.Other responses to the demands included beginning a search for a Black recruiter and Black admissions officers with the goal of recruiting more Black students and launching correspondence with other institutions regarding expanding the scope of study abroad and study away. At the time of the update in the Sophian, the number of Black applicants and accepted students had doubled, but the demand for a Black cultural center had not yet been addressed, and the Fall 1969 deadline had been labeled as not feasible.
