In Sophian article, Black Students’ Alliance defines role

Wanda Jordan ’70, president of the newly-chartered Black Students’ Alliance (BSA), explained the organization’s history, mission, and activities in an article in the Sophian. Comprised of the 41 black students on campus, all of whom were automatically considered members, Smith’s BSA had actually been formed two years prior, but it was not until Fall 1968 that they received a formal charter. Article II of the charter stated that “The purpose of the BSA is to provide a cultural and social organization which will establish for its members a sense of unity and identity within the smaller community of Smith College while at the same time emphasize their common interest in, and relationship to, the larger black community of the nation.”
