Recruiting and supporting students of color is a perennial question for School for Social Work administration. In 1986, Charlotte Horsby Watkins wrote her congratulations to her former classmate in the SSW, the newly appointed Dean Ann Hartman. Horsby wrote about the people and experiences she remembered most, including the transformations she experienced in herself during her time at Smith.
One thing of which I became aware was my own inner strength. Believe me I now know it took strength for a twenty year old colored girl who had never spent more than three days out of the deep south to move into upper class eastern culture.
In response, Dean Hartman explained her plans to recruit more black students and her plans to reach out to Horsby and other alumni of color as to the best way to do that.
