Labor Secretary of the NAACP visits Smith

On Monday, October 21st Herbert Hill, labor secretary of the NAACP is received in the Browsing room as a lecturer. His talk explains the NAACP’s focus on “the elimination of the separate but equal rights status of the Negroes,” through a discussion of key civil rights cases. His talk touches on 1896’s Plessy vs. Ferguson, 1949’s Sweatt vs. Texas, and the then recent ruling of the Supreme Court in the Brown vs. Board of Education case of 1954.
