Student Council declines to participate in anti-Apartheid Protest

On November 14th, the Sophian published an article about the recent correspondence between the Student Council and American journalist John Gunther. The American Committee on Africa had recently called for a world-wide Day of Protest against apartheid in South Africa, to be held on Human Rights Day, December 10th. In a letter to the Council, Gunther encouraged Smith’s participation. The Student Council declined, stating that they would only get involved if students showed an interest. As it turned out, Smithies were interested, and they agreed to plan a panel on South Africa with the Sophian the day after the article was published, to take place December 10th with moderator Gwendolen Carter.
