Students form Peace Coalition, support Peace Treaty

The Student Peace Coalition held its first meeting at McConnell Hall on Wednesday, February 17th. Vicky Garcia ’73 and Kay Stewart ’71 successfully chartered the group by its second meeting on February 25th. The purpose of the coalition was to publicize political activities at Smith and coordinate such activities with those of other Pioneer Valley colleges, building a broader power base and educating the community. Part of their planned actions involved garnering support for political activities taking place through the creation a calendar and Five-College newsletter. For example, they advocated for the national ratification of the National Student Association’s (NSA) joint peace treaty with South and North Vietnamese students. Although the Coalition was a chartered organization, as a “controversial” group they were ineligible for funds from the Student Finance Committee.
