Four Colleges hold civil rights conference, Malcolm X keynotes
The Four Colleges (Mount Holyoke, UMass Amherst, Amherst, and Smith) hosted a weekend conference on civil rights. Three speakers presented in the opening session: Malcolm X, former spokesperson of the Black Muslims and head of the Organization of African Unity; Michael Harrington, president of the League of Industrial Democracy; and Ossie Davis, actor and playwright. Although Smith sent delegates, according to the schedule it did not host any of the events on its campus, unlike the other three colleges. However, it is possible that the campus hosted some of the visitors.
