ジョンさん日本へ

この本はジョンさんの旅行。飛行機で女の人をはなしました。ジョンさんと女の人は同じほんを読みました。そして、飛行機を降りました。そして、飛行機を降りました。それから、ジョンさんは女の人にあって、歌舞伎を見ました。

This book was interesting but also pretty boring. I thought it would get more interesting as a read on, but that didn’t happen. Jon and the woman he met on the plane accidentally switched books and then they met up to exchange books and see a kabuki dance but Jon messed up and made them drink coffee together so they missed their show (or at least that’s what I understood). The last part of the book was a little confusing to me but all in all it didn’t take to long for me to read it and i didn’t necessarily hate it but I didn’t like it so I’ll say I wouldn’t recommendd it unless you really need to read a graded reader level 1 book

招き猫：Welcome Cats

この本はとてもおもしろいですが、ちょっとむずかしくて、ちょっとながいです。この本はれきしのまねきねこ。それはしろいねこ。にほんがたくさんいます！本のねこのなまえはたまです。たまはとてもかわいくて、ちさいでした。たまとおぼうさんはとのさまをてつだいました。しんせつですね！おてらだ、かみなりだ、きがあります。この本を読んでください！

I think this book was really cute. It wasn’t too difficult, but was still slightly challenging. There was some vocab we haven’t learned, but it wasn’t hard to gather the meaning from context or it wasn ‘t essential to understanding the story. It was really interesting to learn the story behind the welcome cats you see everywhere in Japanese culture! I would definitely recommend this book to any cat lover/history buff.

この本はたのしくないですが、ちょっとおもしろいです。本は、日本は小さくて、日本人はせがひくいだと言っていました。この本にたくさんばんごうがあります。れんしゅうをして！

I would not recommend this book on the basis of the story, as it was more factual than plot-based and therefore a rather dry read. However, because this book contains so many numbers to discuss the statistics of Japan, including the country’s size and the average height of the Japanese population, I would recommend that students use this book to practice reading numbers. I found that it was a challenging but helpful exercise to read the numbers out loud. Additionally, the vocabulary was not difficult; unfamiliar words could be figured out with context of surrounding words or of illustrations. Overall, the book was very educational and might prove helpful to students who struggle with numbers in Japanese.

女の子

女の子はとてもきれい本です。文法はやさしいですが、ストーリーはちょっと…

It’s not that it wasn’t interesting or anything. It’s just that beyond the pictures, I didn’t enjoy the book as much as I enjoyed the other books I read. That said, the book is really really beautifully drawn and the sentences are really easy to follow. So I still recommend it to first year japanese students. It’s an easy read and you’ll appreciate the art!

ジョンさんバスの中で

楽しくて、面白い本ですよ。文法はちょっと難しいですが、大変じゃないです。

ジョンさんはジーンズと髪を切るのが好きです。かっこいいと思います。でも、バスで、おばあさんはジョンさんはお金をあまり持っていらないと思います。So the old lady gives John some money to buy new jeans and fix his hair. This embarrasses John, and I found that really funny. There is another story about John being late for class because he overslept on the train. I found that both relatable and unrelatable at the same time. But it was very funny.

I recommend this book to other first years, though not when starting out the reading. The grammar forms are slightly difficult since we haven’t learnt them yet but they are still manageable.

ハチの話

ハチの話は悲しい本です。ハチは犬と先生の友だちです。毎日、一緒に駅に行きました。それから、毎晩一緒に、家に帰りました。ある日、先生はきませんでした。ハチは駅の前にずっと待ちました。

This book is really good. It’s pretty easy to understand, and tells a popular story. I also recommend, if possible, going to see the actual statue. Even though I’ve been to Shibuya Station a number of times, I’ve never seen the Hachi statue…. truly 悲しい。

この本はとてもおもしろです。一半はジョンさんのDIYです。ジーンズを切って、バスにのりました。それから、おばあさんはジョンさんにお金をあげました。ちょっと大変。。。

This book was really funny for its length! The first story detailed John’s DIY “fashionable” jeans, and the second story was a day in the life. I think that in a way, John was a little relatable when he was late to class by sleeping through an entire loop of the Yamanote Line….

ハチの話

私はハチの話が大好きですよ！子どもの時、母はこのはなしをしました。そして、日本に行って、渋谷駅にハチの像を見に行きました。ハチは毎日渋谷駅に先生をまちました。でも,ある日、先生はかえませんでした。しにましたから。十粘液で先生を待ちました。そして、ハチもしにました。とても悲しの話ですね。

This book is not good for anyone who doesn’t like sad stories. It’s for a student who has taken or is taking and is at least halfway through first year Japanese. There is not too much unknown kanji and all of the verbs were known to me. I’ve also heard this story from my mom many times, so that may be another reason why this was an easy read for me. 10 out of 10 would recommend to a friend!

タクシー

このほんはおもしろいすが、ちょうどこわいですね。The story is about a girl who believed that she was still alive even though she already died in a car accident three days ago. Her soul took a taxi to go back to home. The whole story centers around the conversation between the taxi driver and the girl’s mom. The taxi driver learned from the girl’s mom that the girl who took the taxi was not a real human. The tone of the story is warm, but the story itself can be scary to younger-age readers.

I recommend the book to students who have learned Japanese for at least one year. As a 日本語のいねんせい who have only taken Japanese for one semester, I had difficulties with vocabularies while reading the book. でも、I recommend students who are good at Kanji to try on this book, because there are many kanji in this book. Also, the pictures in the book are very helpful for readers to grab the gist of the story.

風と太陽

This story gave me a warm feeling. It was the kind of story I like to read on my own so I could give it my full attention. It was fast-paced and lots of fun. The ending of the story made me laugh even though I should have expected it! The illustrations are so soft and cozy.

I would definitely recommend this story to everyone taking Japanese. Whether a beginner looking for a good start or someone who’s at a more advanced level looking to take a break, this story feels like it would never get old. It’s a book I’d like to revisit in the years to come.
