となりのトトロ(1)・ My Neighbor Totoro: Volume 1

スタジオギブリが好きな人にとって、とてもいい本です。映画(えいが)「となりのトトロ」のフィルムコミックです。ちょっと難(むずか)しい本ですが、わからない言葉(ことば)はたいてい映画から知(し)ています。漢字(かんじ)がたくさんありますが、ふりがなもいつもあります。この本を読(よ)むは難しくて楽(たの)しかったです。

For fans of Studio Ghibli, this is a great book to read (even though Totoro himself doesn’t actually appear in this volume).  It’s the first volume of the “My Neighbor Totoro” film comics, following the story from the beginning of the movie to Satsuki and Mei’s first night in their new house.  It’s a little hard to read, but if you know the film, you’ll be able to understand more than you realize through memory and context.  There’s a lot of kanji that are new for a first-year student, but furigana is always provided, and there are also a lot of kanji that we have already learned.  Being able to read this book is a good goal to aim for, even if it’s on the more difficult side right now.  Reading this book was difficult, but it was a fun challenge.

I recommend this book for fans of Totoro at any level, but as a first-year student it might be more of a goal to strive for than an easy read.  First-year second semester or second-year students might be able to get more out of it from the start.

リンダの旅行

ストリはとてもかわいいですね。リンダさんはせが高いですから、せいかつはちょっとふべんです。ドアはちょっとひくいですから、デパートに行きませ。The book is interesting and is all about the height of a giraffe. In the beginning, Rinda is lonely because it does not have friends due to its high height. At last, Rinda is surrounded by lots of friends and the whole zoo is energetic.

I highly recommend this book because it is a little bit difficult, and time-consuming, compared to the other level0 student books. In this book, we can preview some words in Lesson 7 and 8 by guessing the meaning, which is a better way to learn words rather than just memorizing them.

寿司・すし・sushi

This book introduces history of sushi, history of sushi and simple ways to make sushi. とても面白いです!I learned how to eat sushi in a correct way. Although I eat a lot of sushi and love sushi, I didn’t know how to eat it appropriately until I read this book.

Vocabulary and sentence structures are a little difficult for Japanese beginners, because it contains a lot of kanji (while it is easy to understand for Chinese speakers). But I think 日本語一年生 can understand the content with these cute pictures.

太郎( た ろ う) くんの 夏休 (な つ や す) み – Meg Coulter

この本はおもしろくてかわいいです。男の子はやさしいです。This book is very cute and shows a boy’s various activities during his vacation. The drawings are colorful and the writing is at a good beginner level of someone just learning Japanese.

I recommend this book if you want to practice with more vocab and grammars structures outside of what Genki teaches so it can be more real world applicable. This book is definitely helpful to those taking first year Japanese and is at a beginner level. The story is very easy to follow. Even if some words were not present in the Genki textbook, this book helps the reader inference them.

冬 のさんぽ

話はかわいいです。本はとてもおもしろてやさしいです。芸術はきれいです。きれいです。

I was drawn to this book by the gorgeous art. There were some words that I didn’t know but they were definitely understandable through context. The story was cute and simple. I would recommend this book to Japanese 110 students.

海の旅行

この本は綺麗て、面白いです。I was actually attracted by the drawings of the book at first glance and started reading it. This book is about a little boy’s trip to the sea. It reminds me of my childhood because I always went to the sea with my family. I would recommend this book because it is easy to read: basically all the vocabs are learned in class except that some of the hiragana are written in kanji, but it is a good way to learn! The drawings are also beautiful and the style of the book is also interesting.

京子さんは森 に行きます

“京子さんは森 に行きます” はとてもおもしろくてたのしいです。私はこの本がすきです。そしてこの本のねこはとてもかわいいです。かんじはやさしですがあたらしいかんじがあります。

I really liked this story because the vocab was mostly easy but there were some new words as well. I could recognize some grammar structures from class which was nice. The cat pictures were adorable and the story was fun to read. I would recommend this story to anyone in Japanese 110.

笑い話

この本はすごくおもしろいです。あたらしいたんごとぶんぽうがあります、でも、ストーリーはむずかしくないです。たのしかったです。絵がきれいです。This book contains 4 jokes in a Japanese cultural context.

I recommend this book to Japanese 110 students, because the book is really fun to read and the grammar is really common and useful. There are some new words, but the pictures help me understand. Sometimes they didn’t use the polite forms of verbs because of the context. I found this useful, giving us an idea of the non-polite usage of Japanese language. Also the  jokes are ironic and reflective of some social phenomena, so I strongly recommend this book.

寂しいさんの寂しい1日

さびしいさんの一日

この本はとてもおもしろくてたのしくて難しくないです。寂しいさんの寂しい1日は私の毎日です。宿題がたくさんありますから、パーテイーにぜんぜん行きません。絵画は全部よくて、かわいいです。最後、私はれんないとやすみがほしいです。

I strongly recommend this book because the  content is really interesting and realistic. This book has some words that I haven’t learnt but I can understand them in context. Reading this book is a good way to easily memorize new words. Also, it’s not difficult to Japanese first year students like me!

ハチの話

この本はあまり難しくないです。とても面白いですが悲しです。ハチは頭が良くてとても可愛い犬です。ハチは有名ですよ。私はハチが大好きです。ハチの映画も見ました。

I recommend this book to Japanese 110 students. It is easy to understand. It uses the sentence structures we learn in JPN 110 repetitively throughout the book, which is really helpful in terms of practising the grammar we learned. The vocabulary is mostly within our range, with few unfamiliar words that don’t impede the understanding of the whole story.
