I will recommend this book or story to 1st-year Japanese students.
ジョンさん夏休みに仙台に行って、森さんのいえにホームステイをします。それから、みんなで花火を見ます。七夕の日、ジュンさん短冊に、お願いを書きます。お願いは女の友達がほしいです。
John went to Sendai in summer break and stayed at Mori san’s home. After he came back to Tokyo, he sent Mori san’s child a gift. Few days later, he received a package from Mori san’s child. I am wondering what the package is. This book is easy to read, and it also tells a little about a traditional holiday in Japan, Tanabata. The illustrations are funny. I recommend it to JPN110 students.
縄文杉はすごいですね！この本はちょっと長くて、へいせいです。新しい単語がありますが、だいじょぶです。きれいなしゃしんがたくさなります。
I would recommend this book to other busy first years. It’s online, so it’s easy to access. It’s on the longer side, but it’s still graded readers, so it’s not excessive. It’s not super engaging, but it has its interesting points.

この本はとてもすまらないです。The book describes numbers of things, such as average height, how many people live in Japan, how big Japan is, etc. There is no “story” rather it is like an informational pamphlet.
I would not recommend this book to read for fun. However, If you want to learn some Japanese statistics it would be a good choice. Also if you wanted to read it out loud to practice counting.

この本はとてもおもしろいですが、ちょっとむずかしくて、ちょっとながいです。この本はれきしのまねきねこ。それはしろいねこ。にほんがたくさんいます！本のねこのなまえはたまです。たまはとてもかわいくて、ちさいでした。たまとおぼうさんはとのさまをてつだいました。しんせつですね！おてらだ、かみなりだ、きがあります。この本を読んでください！
I think this book was really cute. It wasn’t too difficult, but was still slightly challenging. There was some vocab we haven’t learned, but it wasn’t hard to gather the meaning from context or it wasn ‘t essential to understanding the story. It was really interesting to learn the story behind the welcome cats you see everywhere in Japanese culture! I would definitely recommend this book to any cat lover/history buff.

この本はたのしくないですが、ちょっとおもしろいです。本は、日本は小さくて、日本人はせがひくいだと言っていました。この本にたくさんばんごうがあります。れんしゅうをして！
I would not recommend this book on the basis of the story, as it was more factual than plot-based and therefore a rather dry read. However, because this book contains so many numbers to discuss the statistics of Japan, including the country’s size and the average height of the Japanese population, I would recommend that students use this book to practice reading numbers. I found that it was a challenging but helpful exercise to read the numbers out loud. Additionally, the vocabulary was not difficult; unfamiliar words could be figured out with context of surrounding words or of illustrations. Overall, the book was very educational and might prove helpful to students who struggle with numbers in Japanese.
ハチの話は悲しい本です。ハチは犬と先生の友だちです。毎日、一緒に駅に行きました。それから、毎晩一緒に、家に帰りました。ある日、先生はきませんでした。ハチは駅の前にずっと待ちました。
This book is really good. It’s pretty easy to understand, and tells a popular story. I also recommend, if possible, going to see the actual statue. Even though I’ve been to Shibuya Station a number of times, I’ve never seen the Hachi statue…. truly 悲しい。

この本はとてもおもしろです。一半はジョンさんのDIYです。ジーンズを切って、バスにのりました。それから、おばあさんはジョンさんにお金をあげました。ちょっと大変。。。
This book was really funny for its length! The first story detailed John’s DIY “fashionable” jeans, and the second story was a day in the life. I think that in a way, John was a little relatable when he was late to class by sleeping through an entire loop of the Yamanote Line….
This story gave me a warm feeling. It was the kind of story I like to read on my own so I could give it my full attention. It was fast-paced and lots of fun. The ending of the story made me laugh even though I should have expected it! The illustrations are so soft and cozy.
I would definitely recommend this story to everyone taking Japanese. Whether a beginner looking for a good start or someone who’s at a more advanced level looking to take a break, this story feels like it would never get old. It’s a book I’d like to revisit in the years to come.
鈴木正雄さんはバスの運転手です。ある日の夜に、死んだおばあさんを見ました。おばあさんは正雄さんに会って、うれしかったです。実は、正雄さんのバスがトラックにぶつかりました。でも、正雄さんは今元気になってよかったです。
In this book, a young driver saw his dead grandma. However, the truth is that his bus crashed into a trunk and he dreamed his grandma. I thought it was a horror story, but it is a warm story. I recommend it to Japanese first year students.
電車の乗るは大変ですね。ジョンさんは電車に乗りに学校にいきました。ジョンさんは昨日の夜友達とカラオケをしました。だkカラオケをしました。だからとても眠かったです。だから学校に１０時５分にいました。この本はちょっとこの本はちょっとつまらなくて、難しくて、高いです。
I liked this book and found it interesting but it seemed to have 2 stories that were sort of disconnected. One is about John’s failed attempt at DIY jeans he saw in a magazine and the other is about him sleeping on the train, missing his stop, and arriving late for school. Regardless, it was and interesting book, even though it was more challenging than i expected it would be for a level 1 Graded Reader. I would recommend it to a 1st year Japanese student who doesn’t mind a longer, less interesting read。
