An early version of Smith’s Black Students Alliance
(Date is for when it was reported in the Sophian)
A group of black graduate and undergraduate Smith students met to discuss common experiences. They hoped to create a more cohesive black community at Smith and help with the adjustment and consciousness of black students. In explaining the unique position that black students occupied on a predominantly white campus, the Sophian reporter stated that “Theirs is above all the problem of identity, which affects styles of clothing, music and dancing” and observed that the new organization would help the entire student body understand black culture and ideas.
