トムちゃんのひかりとやみ

この本はむずかしかったですが、おもしろかったです。新しい単語があります。

This book was sort of difficult to read because there was a lot of non-Genki vocab in it. I had to look a lot of words up and it disrupted the flow of the story a bit. However, when I was reading it I was very curious what would happen next and I wanted to keep reading. I also really liked the drawings. I recommend it for people who don’t mind looking up vocab.

ゆきさんの食べもの

この本はかわいです。むずかしくなかったです。 私はこのねこが好きです!

The drawings/watercolors are really good. They were fun to look at.  It was a simple story and was easy to read. I don’t think there was any non-Genki vocab. I highly recommend this book.

チチの友たち

この本はとてもおもしろいです。チチさんねこです。ちちさんはしんりんでまよいました。友だちを待っていました。たくさんどうぶつ(animal)は手伝いました。友だちはせがひくくて、みみがちいさくて、ちょっと太っていと言っていました。最後、ちちさんは友だちとおいしいケーきを食べました。いいですね。

The storyline is very warm, as all the others help Chichi find its friend. And it is very cute when they are guessing if the rabbit and other animals are Chichi’s friend.

There are some kanji (with hiragana on top) that we have not learned, like くろい(black). But it is easy to guess the meaning according to the pictures.

Also, it is a good review for Japanese first-year student because there are lots of sentences using と思いました andと言っていました。

海(うみ)の旅行(りょこう)

I really like the pictures the authors drew! Those drawings are very cute. 海がだいすき!This book reminds me of a lot of 楽しいこと, though I did not get the ending. Overall, I like it.

I will recommend this to Japanese first-year students. The book is easy to read and interesting. Additionally, we can learn some new kanji.

モモの友 と も だち

私は本がすきです。本はおもしろおもしろいです。キャラクターはとてもかわいいです!

I would personally recommend this book to other first-year Japanese students. The story is simple and cute. And so are the characters. However, I do wish there were more pictures just to split up the text a bit more.

京子(きょうこ)さんは、森(もり)に行(い)きます

この本はかわいです!

私はこの本がすきです、やさしておもしろいですから。

This book is from the point of view of a cat. If you love cats you will love this book. It was easy in a good way. I could read the whole thing easily without missing any meaning. It utilized many different grammatical structures that we’ve learned. I give it 5 stars.

みつはさんは、ちよさんに、でんわをかけます。

みつはさんは、ちよさんに、でんわをかけます。ちよさんは、みつはさんのてつだうとききました。すうがくのしゅくだいは むずかしいから。

This was a really easy book to read because senpai only used the grammar and vocabulary we learned. However, I felt like the story shifted a little too much from helping Chiyo with math homework to discussing what to eat. It felt like they were planning to go hang out instead. Therefore I gave the book four stars. But I highly recommend to 1st-year students.

西町交番の良さん にわにわに?

この本はとてもかわいくて、たのしです。本の物語はとてもおもしろいです。私はこの本がすきです!

The story is about a policeman who gets called to a house to deal with something pretty unusual: an alligator! It is a really energetic and fun story and the characters in it are super adorable and endearing. The final joke in the book is really unexpected but also super cute and funny!

I definitely recommend this book, especially to my fellow 1st year Japanese students. There are a few new vocabulary words but the illustrations make these very clear and the grammar structures are definitely ones we have learned. This book is well worth the very short amount of time it takes to read it!

たしろじま

田代島

This book talks about the cats that live in the Japanese city of Tashirojima. The illustrations are well done and the content is both interesting and easy to understand. むずかじゃないです!

I would recommend to level 0 readers and first year Japanese students because the vocabulary is fairly simple and the sentence structure is simple as well which makes it accessible to new Japanese-language learners.

冬のさんぽ

この本はとてもかわいいです。The drawings are すごくきれいで、おもしろいです。It is a very charming book about the winter adventures of two friends, アンナとリース。The two kids play in the snow, meet an adorable dog and eventually arrive at a warm and cozy restaurant with おいし食べもの!

As I previously mentioned, the quality of the art in this book is really amazing. Combined with the charming story, it makes this book a thoroughly delightful read. It also made me nostalgic as it reminded me of many of my childhood winter adventures with my friends, growing up in Minnesota.

I definitely recommend this book, particularly to my fellow first-year Japanese students. I will caution that there is a decent amount of unfamiliar vocabulary in the book so it is not one of the easier level 0/tadoku books.  この本はやさしいくない。However, it is well worth the effort it takes to read it!
