どうしてエビの体は曲がった?どうしてねこ年がない?

この本はとてもおもしろくて、かわいいです。大好きです!

The book consists of two stories. The first one is why the shrimp’s body is not straight, and the second one is why there is no cat year. It’s so fun to know some Japanese traditional stories! There are some unknown words in the book, but I can figure out their meanings when I see pictures.

かさじぞう

おじいさんとおばあさんはおかねがありません。おじいさんはまちにかさをうりにいきます。でも、だれもかさをかいません。それから、おじいさんはじぞうのあたまに、かさおかぶせます。すぎのあさ、おじいさんとおばあさんはたべものおみつけます。

An old man and old woman are poor. The old man goes into the market to try and sell his umbrellas, but no one buys any. When he is walking home he sees the じぞう (Jizo statues) have snow on them so he puts the umbrellas on them and goes home. In the morning the old man and woman discover food outside their home. The じぞう must have left it as thanks.

I think this is a really interesting folk story within a graded reader. It gives good insight into Japanese culture. However, it is a rather difficult read for a first year first semester student. I would recommend this book if you are in your first year of Japanese and looking for a challenge. It would also be a good read for someone starting their second year of Japanese.

笠地蔵

This story gave me an at-home feeling. I felt like I wanted to curl up under the covers with a cup of hot chocolate by the fire. Sweet and straightforward, it wasn’t terribly difficult, and the illustrations blew me away.

I would definitely recommend this story to everyone taking Japanese. Because the plot is so cozy and soft, it won’t be frustrating to read. It felt special and made me grateful I was learning this language.

舌切り雀

この本は面白いです。でもちょっと怖いです。I think this book is interesting but it is also a little bit horrible. This book is about a story happening among an old man, an old women and a bird. At the end of the story, the old women received a box of monsters from the bird because of her greed. The picture of the monsters was terrifying. The story is warning the readers to not be greedy by using the horrible picture of monsters to terrify readers, which I think is smart.

I recommend this book to all Japanese students who like to read stories. This book might be easier for students who know more kanji to read, because there are many vocabularies and kanjis that first year Japanese students haven’t learned. However, students, without knowing many kanjis and vocabularies, still can get the idea of the story through the pictures.

大豆

大豆はかわい本です。ちさい本です。でも、おもしろかたですよ。This book explains the importance and functionality of the soybean in Japan. It contains colorful pictures that compliment the information nicely so if one doesn’t understand the reading, they’ll still be able to grasp the main idea by use of the illustrations.

I would recommend this book to my classmates. It’s not only a great exercise in practicing your Japanese skills, but also quite informative! The only qualm I have with this book is the lack of text to make sense of. Each page consists of only 1-2 sentences. However, the Japanese skills needed to understand this book are very fitting of the Japanese 1 class. Enjoy!

男の子と女の子は飛行機で会います。
男の子と女の子は同じの漫画を持ってきましたから、出会いは可笑しくて、面白いです。
男の子と女の子は間違った漫画で飛行機を出ます。
だから、もう一度、会わなきゃいけません。
一緒に、出かけます。
でも、付き合うでしょうか。
可愛くて、ちょっとロマンチックな本だと思います。

I recommend this book to those who want to advance their reading level from 0 to 1! There is a big jump from level 0 to level 1 in regards to the amount of text on a page, resulting in more context to the images of the story. Since there are slightly more advanced sentences/ grammar structures and a higher volume of words, I felt that reading this book was a closer and more accurate experience to what it would be like to read regular Japanese books. A lot can still be interpreted from the images, but the text gives more depth to an image than level 0 did. For me, the hardest part of reading this book stemmed from the formatting of sentences from up-to-down, rather than from left-to-right. We have yet to write in this format in Japanese class, so it took a lot more time to read—- going from one character to the next instead of word by word. In conclusion, this book is very friendly training for a reader getting used to the direction of fluid Japanese text!

笠地蔵

「笠地蔵」のほうが「女の子」よりいいと思います。おじいさんとおばあさんはとても可愛くて、素敵な人です。漢字と単語は難しくないですよ!この本も、辞書が必要としなくてもいいですよ。読んでください!

I think “Kasa Ji Zou” was better than “Girl.” The old grandfather and old grandmother are cute, kindhearted people. The kanji and tango is not difficult. With this book, you also don’t need to have a dictionary.

女の子

物語は不完全だと感じるから、この本はまあまあです。それから私は絵はちょっと怖だと思います。でも、漢字と単語はとても簡単ですよ!本の文法は最初の教科書から来ました。辞書が必要としなくてもいいですよ。

Because this story feels incomplete, I thought it was so-so. I also though the artwork was a little bit scary. But, the kanji and vocabulary is extremely easy, and this book’s grammar structures are all from Genki I. You do not need to have a dictionary.

この本はおもしろいです。着物のれきしがあります。着物を作れますよ!たくさん習いました。

I would recommend this story to any Japanese students who want to learn more about Japanese culture. The grammar is easy, but there are a lot of kimono-related vocab terms that are unfamiliar. I also found the different ages unfamiliar. That being said, the pictures made even the words I didn’t know easy to understand.

ジョンさん日本へ

この物語の会話は現実的ですから、便利です。私たち単語を習いました。多分五分ぐらい読めます。私ジョンさんとゆきさんはいい友達だといいですね!読んでください!

Because the story is more realistic, the dialogue is useful for real life situations. We have already learned all the vocabulary, so it will be an easy read. It will probably take you 5 minutes to read through the entire story. I hope that Johnさん and Yukiさん will be good friends. I recommend this book!
