Week 6: Editing & Special Collections

10/8: Peer Review

Due: Work on your site report draft & bring to class (and a computer/tablet)

What should my draft look like?

  • Everyone’s draft will be in a different state of completeness when we meet on Tuesday. I will be handing out this peer review rubric, which is among the Assignment 1 files on the website.
  • Some students may bring an outline, which I imagine will include ideas/data to add to report, but not in full text. Some students may bring a draft of the text for review.
  • Remember that page 3 of the assignment provides a report template– use that to get started with your outline. If you fill out all those bullet points– both from your research and your site visit– you will be on your way to getting this written and covering all the important information required.

How will I share my draft with you?

  • We will take the first 5 minutes of class for everyone to share their draft with me– this may be emailing an attached file or uploading a URL to share a Google Document. More info in class.
  • Please do not skip class because you are worried you have not gotten enough of your draft completed– this will be a helpful exercise no matter how far along you are in the project (and not one to miss… unless you are sick, of course!)

What if I am doing a peer swap with a partner?

  • Please bring a laptop or tablet you can swap with your partner. You can either make comments on a paper rubric (I will bring them) or directly into their document; you can discuss this as a pair.

What if I want to do an anonymous peer review?

  • Bring a printed draft of your site report draft to class– ideally double spaced if text and single spaced for an outline– and include the last 4 numbers of your student ID on the first page. There is a small-ish group of students who are doing the anonymous review, so I will manage passing out the drafts, collecting them briefly, and then handing them back to the author.

What else should I know or do?

  • Citations– both in-text and in the bibliography– are sometimes challenging in a new discipline of study. Please bring your sources and any questions you have. We will do some practice citations towards the end of class.
