9/19: Digging Through the Archives
Due: We are going to review HBH’s main publication on Gournia. Please don’t get too bogged down in all the small details, names, etc., but consider it both as a reflection of its time and a way to learn about archaeological data sets.
HAWES, H. B., WILLIAMS, B. E., SEAGER, R. B., & HALL, E. H. (2014). Gournia, Vasiliki, and Other Prehistoric Sites on the Isthmus of Hierapetra, Crete: Excavations of the Wells-Houston-Cramp Expeditions 1901, 1903, 1904. Second Edition. INSTAP Academic Press [1st edition is 1908]
- Read the following sections of the introduction:
- On the north shore of Crete (pp. v-v)
- Outline of Minoan Civilization (pp. 1-6)
- Excavations at Gournia (pp. 19-26). [just flip through this to see the photos/drawings– it is VERY detailed]
- Pick one of the following artifact analysis sections (& check out the drawings):
- Household Objects (pp. 27-28)
- Domestic Utensils (pp. 29-30)
- Stone and Clay Tools (pp. 31-32)
- Bronze Tools and Weapons (pp. 33-34)
- Stone Vases (pp. 35-36)
- Pottery…
- Pottery: Early Gournia Style (Middle Minoan) (pp. 37-38)
- Pottery: Town Style (Late Minoan I) (pp. 39-40) & Pottery: Town Style (pp. 41-42) & Pottery: Town Style (pp. 43-44)
- Pottery: Reoccupation Style (Late Minoan III) (pp. 45-46)
- Cult Objects (pp. 47-48)
The last two questions below are from more recent publications:
- How did HBH’s work at Gournia fit into both excavation goals of the time and influence ongoing research goals at Gournia and in the region? Gournia Excavations
- What are two research questions that have been answered by more recent research at Gournia? What methods/data sets were used? This is a great article from Archaeology Magazine (2015) summarizing the ongoing project.
