西町交番の良さん 「助けて!」

この本はやみやすいです。あまりかいわがありませんで、たくさんえがあります。えはとてもかわいいです。りょうさんはいいおまわりさんです。

I recommend this book for Japanese 1 students. It’s a very simple and cute book about a policeman helping people around his town. There are a few vocabulary and phrases that we haven’t learned yet, but it’s still very easy to understand. There also aren’t a lot of Kanji so it’s a quick and easy read.

西町交番の良さん「にわにわに?」

この本は、とても楽しです!かんじがたくさんあります。でも、むずかしくないです。良さんは、優しくて、かわいい人ですね。

I recommend this book to Japanese first year students. It is very easy to read with simple grammar, and we’ve learnt most of the kanji in class. There are some kanji that we don’t know yet, but illustrations will help you understand. The story is about a policeman catching crocodile in a woman’s backyard. It is a very fun story, and the illustrations are also extremely cute.  It’s worth reading!

風と太陽

このストーリーはイソップ寓話のひとつ。とても良いです。太陽さんは優しいですが、かぜさんは親切じゃないです。でも、トーリーは簡単くで、すぐ面白いです。

I will definitely recommend this book, which is a well-known folktale, to the beginning learners of Japanese. It is quite helpful to review what we have learned since it covers a lot of phrases and new words we learned in the Genki textbook. The whole story is easy to read and readers can always figure out the meaning by simply looking at the illustration on each page. It also helps to review the grammar of the formation of adjective and verb conjugation.

これは何の数字?

この本はおもしろいです!むずがむずかしくないです。たくさんかんじがあります。でも、やさしいです。This book is about numbers, like population and area of Japan. It’s easy to read. Although there’re lots of Kanji, it’s easy to guess their meaning from the context or the pictures.

I’ll recommend this book to JPN110 classmates. Because many of the Kanji were learned in class, it’s good to review in this book. The grammar is really easy. All of them were covered in class. And the book itself is interesting. It not only introduces the population and geography of Japan, but also some cultures, like “Japanese women spend about 3 hours in doing housework per day, while Japanese men only spend 18 minutes.”

この本がすきです!おもしろくて、きれいで、ちょっとやさしいです。かんじがたくさんありますが、むずかしくないです。

I would certainly recommend 桜 to other first-semester Japanese students.   The story is not  difficult to read, but it is still challenging enough because of its unfamiliar kanji and vocabulary.  Context and illustrations help determine the meaning and gist of these, though, so a student should not have much of a problem understanding the story.  It is also a rather interesting, worthwhile read; it was fun to learn more about sakura, how its seasons vary along the Japanese archipelago, and how people celebrate it.

木村家の毎日「お正月」

この本はとても面白くて、難しじゃないです。お正月、木村家の毎日は忙しいです。いろいろなお祝いです。

I recommend this book to JPN110 students. It talks about how Japanese families celebrate New Year. It’s very interesting to learn these traditions so that next time when you are in Japan during January, you can join the celebrations! The book includes some kanjis we’ve already learned, it’s a good way to review those kanjis in a story setting.

木村家の毎日「一郎、学校で」

この本は、とても面白くて、可愛いです。一郎は京子さんが好きです。でも、京こさんは知りません。

This book is easy to read and very interesting. I will recommend 1st-year Japanese students to read as it would be a great start for the yomu yomu project.

田舎のネズミと町のネズミ

この本はとてもおもしろくて、かわいいです!大すきです。ネズミは小さいですが、たくさん食べますよ!男の人は大きいです。ねこはしんせつじゃないです。こわいですね!田舎のネズミは田舎のうちがすきです。でも、まちのネズミはまちのうちがすきです。この本をよんでください!

This book was really cute, and a bit longer than the others, which I liked. The vocabulary were mostly things we know, but with a few new words that could be learned from context. It is based on an Aesop fable which is really cool since I read those a lot as a kid! It had a nice message about how what’s a perfect fit for someone, isn’t necessarily a perfect fit for everyone (and that’s ok!). Overall, I would recommend it for anyone just starting Japanese (first year, first semester).

きむらけの毎日 「けっこんしき」

きまらけさんのおばさんは、けっこんします。Kimurake and her family help prepare for and go to the wedding ceremony. The book explains several aspects of the traditional wedding ceremony such as the drinking of wine (おさけ) and the leaving of money as a gift at the table after the ceremony. There is a cute twist at the end where Kimurake’s parents forget to leave the money and are distraught, having to give the money later in person.

本は、とてもおもしろくて、たのしかったです。むずかしくなかったです。I would definitely recommend this book to level 1 Japanese students. It was a relatively quick read, with cute illustrations that help the reader understand the vocabulary. It was also really fun learning about a traditional Japanese wedding ceremony.

田舎のネズミと町のネズミ

この本は難しくないです、がやさしくないです。短いですよ。でも、可愛い絵たくさんあります。あたらしいぶんぽもちょっとあります。単語はちょっと難しいです。

I would recommend this book to japanese 110 students. There’s one or two simple grammar structures that may prove useful down the road. Also, since it’s a story a lot of people already know, the story is very easy to follow. But for the same reason, it isn’t extremely interesting.
