African Feminist Initiative (AFI) at Pennsylvania State University was established in April 2015  to advance research and teaching about African feminisms at Penn State and to build partnerships between Penn State faculty and feminist scholars, activists, and institutions in Africa and beyond.

AFI is governed by an external Advisory Board, consisting of influential feminist scholars from around the world, as well as an internal Steering Committee made up of feminist scholars of Africa at Penn State. With generous funding from the College of the Liberal Arts, as well as numerous other units across campus, they have organized several international workshops and conferences, as well as an African Feminist Lecture Series. They also host a vibrant listserv and regularly facilitate virtual Feminist Dialogues on significant African issues.
